Competitions

Phoenix Camera Club participates in both internal and external photographic competitions. While we take every competition seriously in so far as we adhere to the rules and we do our best to be successful in them, the prime purpose of holding and entering these competitions is to help us grow and develop our skills and confidance, both as a club and as individual members.

Our regular internal competitions are relatively informal affairs, whereby members submit their images that meet the prescribed competition theme. These images are then judged, either by the membership as a whole, or by an invited guest judge, who will also critique the images. Constructive criticism is given (and hopefully taken) in good humour and we hope that we might all learn something that helps us improve our photography.

Placed images are allocated points, which cumulatively count towards the winner of our Annual Competition Trophy.

In addition to these internal competitions, we are increasingly participating in regional events, such as the Devon Image Battle whereby the club is represented by members selected images and presented for judging according the to rules of the individual competition.

We also encourage our members to enter individual photographic competitions and some of our photographers have been successful in this arena.

Competition: September 2011 - 'Portrait' - Colour Print Winner

Our competition for September was entitled Portrait' and produced a wide range of prints in both colour and mono, with a variety of interpretations of the theme.

First place in the Colour print category was Chris Thain with his sports 'close-up' of a Time trial cyclist preparing to start a race. This shot was taken at the British Cycling Time Trial Event held recently in Holsworthy.

This shot was captured on a Canon 400D using a 70-300 mm telephoto lens.

Competition: September 2011 - 'Portrait' - Mono Print Winner

Winner of the Mono print category for the Portrait competition was 'Faithful Friend', by Paul Leach, a more traditional style portrait with a lovely sepia tone and a soft vignette treatment.

Paul used a Canon 7D with a 24-105mm f4L lens and wireless Speedlite flash.

It's a lovely image, very well done Paul.
